Orchids

After a day spent splashing around in cold water while at work, I decided to do something relaxing and fun when I got home. Somehow Kim and I have managed to accidentally grow a beautiful Orchid. It lives in our bathroom (so our cats won't eat it) and is thriving quite well. My idea of a fun relaxing afternoon meant moving the Orchid downstairs into the Dog Cave (I hate the trem "Man Cave" so I use "Dog Cave" because the basement is also where our big dogs have their bowls, beds, and crates along side my photography stuff) for some photos.

I placed the Orchid on a table and then grabbed a tripod and mounted my camera. I used an 24-85mm zoom (which has a macro switch) for the shot. I had thoughts of shooting it in natural light, but the day was very overcast and there was almost no light streaming in from the windows. So I lit it. I wanted an even spread of light, that filled deep into the flower. I wasn't concerned with direction at all, and I wanted the light very tight in on the Orchid. I used my ring flash. It was maybe a couple of inches at most from the Orchid. This close in, the light was relatively huge and powerful. My final working aperture was something like f/29 and I never went above 1/4 power on my SB800 (which was mounted in the Orbis Ring Flash, triggered via a ttl cord). I kinda liked the look I was getting with the photo largely underexposed. I shot some brighter, some darker, but really was digging the darker images. It really brought out the colors perfectly. Right out of the camera I was quite pleased. I kept my ss @ 1/250 to kill most of the ambient and ISO at 200. Here is an image with no adjustments.

I was getting a little bit of a reflection from something in the background (I think it was a shiny edge of a TV) and a nice hint of other Orchid blooms around the main subject. Not to bad. I made some minor tweaks in LR and then moved into PS for some work. I removed a few inconsistient spots on the flower first. Then I created 2 different curves adjustment layers. One for shadows and the other for highlights. I then painted in some additional highlights and shadows to the image. Next I added a saturation layer and made some very minor adjustments to the color of the Orchid. Then I converted the image to Lab color and made another slight adjustment to the color. A little sharpening to finish and then save as a jpeg.

I then edited a second image. This time I removed everything except the main bloom of the Orchid and made the same adjustments as earlier. This image did start just a little brighter.

I think this may be the image I use for the next group challenge, Symmetry. I got to pick the challenge theme this month. I didn't have this in mind at the time. I was thinking something more along the lines of a symmetrical pattern in a piece of fruit or on a flower. I think this works rather well for the challenge though. If I stumble across something better between now and the deadline I might change my mind.

Spying Cartman in a Drop of Water

So for today's I Spy "water" photo challenge I had the idea to shoot a drop of water with something behind it.

I've shot drips and drops and splashes lots before, but it's been quite a while. I've never tried to shoot a drop in mid air with an image behind it. Today seemed like a great day to try.

Some of the things I wasn't sure about was the best distance to put the image behind the water drop. Should I light the water as well as the image?

I started out by getting a zip lock bag, filling it with water, and clamping it to the boom arm of a c-stand. I raised it up high, but a bowl under it, and then used a small knife to cut a hole in the bag so the water would begin to drip. I got Kim to hold her finger where the water was dripping so I could focus on her finger. I had a big light on the image and another just bouncing into the ceiling for an overall fill. I started shooting at about f/13, 1/250, ISO really low.

I shot hundreds of images and was not pleased. First off, it's hard to catch a drip of water in mid air. I just shot bursts and occasionally got a drop in frame. The flash duration of the big flashes was so long, the pulse of light wasn't freezing the water. Ugh.

I next tried to shoot an available light shoot at about 1/8000 of a second. I brought in a work light (non strobe) to raise the ambient level up so that I could shoot that fast. I couldn't use flash because of the 1/250 sync limit. So I shot away with the ambient. f/4, ISO as high as it would go. Yuck.....

So I stepped back, sat down, and thought about it for a minute. I knew what I needed. I needed to be able to shoot incredibly fast.... Shutter speed wasn't gonna get me there. So the answer was flash. I needed a flash with a super quick duration. SB800 in close. I think my final power setting was about 2/3 of a stop below 1/16 power. So not much power. The flash duration was super quick.

After a bunch of test shots trying to catch a drop in the air I was happy I could now freeze the drop pretty well. Now to fine tune. I brought the image in very close to the drip of water. Maybe less than a foot away. By the way, the image is upside down, because when seen in the drop of water it will be inverted and right side up.

I refocused a few times, changed my aperture, and changed distances some trying to get everything just right. I finally got sick of fighting it. I got a few images that looked good enough. I'm still not in love with the image in the water drop, but it'll do. Now that I remember how to do this, next time I can concentrate all my time on getting the focus in the water drop perfect. Music

A photo group that I'm a part of has started a monthly (I think) photo challenge/assignment. The first subject/theme is Music. Anything to do with music.

My first ideas revolved around shooting a musical instrument. Maybe a selective focus or tilt shift of the strings on a guitar or keys on a piano. Then I thought about finding a band playing somewhere and getting a motion based photo of a drummer. My next idea was to go down and shoot at Pete's Music City in Calhoun. Then I wanted a shot of me, in front of a computer, wearing headphones, silhouetted against the screen. All this went through my mind in a matter of seconds.

I then decided I wanted to shoot something that reflected how I currently interact with music. I've been having all these ideas about technology related posts for GoCo360, and this kinda fits in. Years ago a music theme for me would have absolutely ment shooting a live performance in a dirty, stinky, poorly lit bar somewhere in Athens. Not anymore. Music (for me) comes from a computer, and more than likely is only heard by me (headphones). So this was where I was going. How I listen to music now.

I wanted to shoot my iPhone, as it was playing music (with an artist visible on the screen). Initially I wanted headphones hooked to it, but then had a better idea. I'd lean the iPhone up against a Jawbone Jambox. The Jambox is a bluetooth loudspeaker (which can also be used as a speaker phone). It's lightweight, has a decent sound quality, and is very portable. Plus it is a cool color of red and has a great pattern on it, so I knew it would look cool in a photo.

So how to make this look cool, do it all in camera, and not be another boring product shot. I wanted to make it dark, and then light the iPhone and Jambox. But then I only had a dark looking product shot. So I went to an old trick. Bokeh. Creative bokeh.

Kim helped me cut out the pattern of some musical notes into a small disc that became the aperture in my lens. You could do this with any lens (I used to do this trick on a 50mm all the time), but I used a LensBaby. Here's Kim's crafty work!

After the new aperture ring was mounted, I needed to place some lights in the background. We used a battery powered set of colored LED Christmas lights. I had the lights already mounted to an old bicycle wheel I used for light painting photos previously. We untaped some of the LED lights and let them kinda dangle down the frame of the wheel. I then clamped the wheel to a light stand. After some initial looks through the lens (with the camera in Live Mode) we came up with a good distance and height for the lights, relative to the subject (iPhone). I then placed the iPhone and Jambox on a piece of black fabric which was draped across a small table.

Next I brought in my key light and played around with the placement of it, and the placement of the iPhone and Jambox. I used a grid spot on a SB800 as the only light source for the photo. I triggered the light by another SB800, mounted in the hot shoe, set to the lowest power setting. The remote SB800 was in SU-4 mode (remote). I couldn't use TTL because the LensBaby is a non cpu lens, thus TTL wouldn't work.

I moved the position of the light around some, changed power settings on it, and ended up feathering it over the top of the subjects some. When I had it firing directly at the Jambox, the red color of the Jambox spilled down onto the black fabric (a little).

Camera settings? This was easy since I didn't have to worry with aperture settings at all (the aperture was a musical note, remember). Shutter Speed was 1/250th initially, but then I slowed it down to let the image of the artist (Cee Lo Green) burn in on the iPhone. ISO was below 200. I shot maybe 15 images total. Once I got everything dialed in, I shot about 8 extra images. Each one a little more power on the key light, or a little closer with the key (just because I wanted to get a good range of exposures and I didn't want to rely on the LCD display to make sure I had what I wanted).

Not much post. I used LR3 to take care of a little red on the fabric right beside the Jambox. I increased blacks, adjusted contrast, vibrance, saturation, and sharpness. I did a small amount of spot increases of brightness and contrast around the phone case. That's it. Never opened PS. Here's the final image...

Music...

I'm very pleased with the final result. It's almost exactly what I had in mind when I envisioned this. This is how I interact with music today. From my phone, out to something else, and then on to me. I think this represents it pretty well.

If I hadn't shot this, I did have another image in mind. It would have been a tribute (that means an exact reshoot of an image I love) to another photographers work. I knew exactly how I'd shoot it. The only problem would be getting my wife to cooperate and be the model. The photo is called "In love with music" by Dmitry Kuznetsov.

Tacos for GoCo360

I tried some authentic tacos from a new (to me) place and ended up doing a post about them on GoCo360.blogspot.com today. Since I was shooting, editing, and writing a post about it, I decided to do a quick post about the photos too.

I set up in the kitchen of my house and made a few test shots while Kim was out procuring the tacos. I used a nice big Octa as a key light. It was positioned behind the food firing toward the camera. Fill light came from a ring flash and a reflector camera right.

I shot the photo using a macro lens and was at about f/9, 1/250, ISO 200. Power on the main light (AB1600) was as low as it would go, 1/32 power. Power on the ring flash light (SB800) was at 1/32 power too. I threw in the reflector on stand for good measure.

When I first started shooting some test shots I was getting reflections and hot spots off of the countertop from the main light. So I clamped some black fabric onto the bottom portion of the softbox to limit the spill of light onto the counter behind the plate of food. Worked perfectly.

Before the tacos arrived I got the settings dialed in and made sure I was happy with everything. My stand in models were an orange and a sweet potato.

All I had to do when the food arrived was place it on the table and work on the composition. I ended up going with a tighter framed photo that what I had initially planned on. I just thought the texture of the food looked better closer up. Not much work to do in post. Slight adjustment of fill light, a little contrast, vibrance, saturation, and a minor increase of warmth to the color balance. Of course the most important thing was to shoot quickly, and then eat the tacos! The tacos were al pastor, tripa, chorizo, and lengua! Here was the image used on the blog...

So I've spent the past few days playing around trying to get a new photo website up and running. I wanted a site that was simple, clean, and dark. I think I found something that I'm happy with. I'm sure I'll make changes as time passes, but it runs on flash, html, and mobile devices and that was one of my main goals.

I loaded some pet photos (main goal), some random human photos, and a few real estate/garden photos. Now on to marketing (eventually)...

I shot a pic today for use on my personal blog (www.zanehollingsworth.com) and since I haven't shot much of anything in the past week, I thought I'd entertain myself and do a little post about the photo here.

I was a Bad Pug Parent recently and needed a lead photo for the post. Belle was in a cooperative mood (meaning that she was nearly passed out asleep), so I started grabbing the gear. I wanted something that highlighted her face, and then let everything else kinda fall away. Plus I wanted to use one of my new toys, a Justin Clamp.

I mounted a SB800 onto the clamp and placed it on my computer desk, aiming it down at her little pug face. Next I started getting my settings together. Fast enough to make the room darkish and bring in some detail from out the window. Initially the window was blown out so I kept dialing up the speed and killing iso. I wanted a shallow depth of field, so I left my aperture at f/2.

Belle in her chair, hanging out. The SB800 is mounted to the clamp and then clamped to a chair. I then wheeled it in tight and dialed the power down by 1.7 stops.

This is one of the times when I like to use TTL. I wanted a faster sync speed (I ended up at 1/500, f/2, ISO 200 for the image) so I took advantage of the TTL FP sync thingy. I didn't like where I had the light initially, so I clamped it onto another chair and wheeled it in close.

I got a few shots of her looking at me, but the one I really liked was of her kinda looking away.

If I'd had a predictable and patient model, I would have used a small softbox and tried to make the shadow from the seat less harsh. But I never know when Belle is gonna take off after a cat, so I wanted to get some shots as quickly as I could. As I feared, one shot after this, Kim came home and Belle was off to greet her. Glad I didn't try the softbox.

Easy edit. A little WB adjustment to warm things up just a bit. A little cropping, exposure, contrast, and saturation improvements in LR3. Quick, down and dirty. No PS at all on this one.

Smiling Baby on New Year's Eve

I haven't shot much the past few days. I did sneak a few pics of a cute little visitor we had on Saturday. Once he woke up I stalked around until he was awake and looking at everyone. At first he would only mean mug me, but then his mom came up and stood behind me and made him smile.

I shot this in aperture mode, bouncing a SB800 off the ceiling in TTL @ -1 1/3 stops, using a 35mm @ f/2.2, ss 1/100, iso 500. This is the how I like to use TTL. It filled in nicely.

I did a little editing to the photos. Exposure and a few minor adjustments in LR, a minor amount of skin touch ups, and then a lab adjustment in PS.

Southern Sad

There's a building near Lookout Mt. in Chattanooga, called the Southern Saddlery Building. It houses various tenants, including an Italian restaurant (Boccaccia), a digital media company, North Light Imaging (a photo lab), and various professional offices.

If you stand in the parking lot and frame up the logo on the building just right, you get this.

I like it. This is the portion of the building where lots of therapists and counselors have their offices. I wonder if they've ever looked at the sign and picked up on what it could say...

The print lab, North Light Imaging, offers giclée printing. I'm interested to see how expensive it is and how I like the quality compared to something from Image Wizards.

I shot "Southern Sad" on a Canon G11. 8.1mm, iso 200, ss 1/160, f/4.5. Edited in LR3. Curves & LAB adjustments in CS5. I toyed with removing the telephone pole, but decided against it. I think I want to shoot this again, but at night. Maybe then there wouldn't be any cars and I could play around with one long exposure, and a few flash lit exposures layered together.

Trying New Things

Beginning today, I'm gonna try to do some different things with my various blogs. I'm gonna attempt to keep family/friend/stalker stuff on my personal blog (www.zanehollingsworth.com), exercise and diet stuff on my fitness blog, Belle on her blog, and photo stuff here. Of course there will be photos on all of the blogs, but I'm gonna try and keep the nerdy, behind the scenes, boring stuff here. So onto the first post in a quite a while on this blog.

I'm in love with the new Xmas Tree in Calhoun. Some love it, some hate it. I happen to think it is a fantastic background for shooting portraits in front of. I've seen lots of other people trying to get shots of it as well. Most using iPhones or point and shoots. I've even seen a couple of bigger cameras out, but they've all been using either the pop up/built in flash, or none at all. I had been into town a couple of weeks ago and got a couple of decent images of just the tree and parts of downtown. I'd been wanting to get a few moments to shoot a portrait in the area. Xmas eve I got the chance.

My idea was to use the tree as a background, shoot wide open, low iso, slowish shutter speed (to burn in the lights from the tree), and light the subject(s) with a flash. I didn't want to use a on camera flash (too harsh), nor did I want to put a light stand up (my family was moving around a lot due to an excited Mr. Oliver). I didn't want any additional attention a light stand might bring about from any law enforcement or city official who might wonder by. I wanted to be able to light the image well, not draw unwanted attention, and be mobile. So I used a ring flash. I stuck a Nikon SB800 into an Orbis Ring Flash attachement, triggered it via a pocket wizard, and used a 1/4 cut CTO gel to warm up the flash.

I made a very wise decision before I started shooting. I made my father stand still for a second and hold a white balance card. I shot a few images of him holding it as I adjusted the power of my flash and then made one final image of him holding the card after all the adjustments had been made to the flash and camera settings. I used this image to create a custom white balance for all the remaining shots. This made my life so much easier once back home and in LightRoom.

As we shot a handfull of images I became frustrated with my setup. I was having trouble holding focus (Oliver was wiggling around with excitement) and ended up stopping down my aperture a little bit. Still not thrilled with the focusing abilities when I've got the camera stuck into the ring flash at night. Lesson learned. If I'm gonna shoot with a ring flash in the dark, make sure some ambient light hits the subject (so I can focus), use a flashlight to focus, or go really nuts and try to manually focus.

SOOC, I wasn't thrilled with the results. I chimped the screen after ever handfull of images, then looked them all over a couple of times as I rode around with the family in search of Xmas lights to show Oliver. The more I looked, the less impressed I was (and I got car sick...). All of the images looked way to cool. Most were not as sharp as I like. More or less, just blah images.

This is why I was so happy I used the custom WB, and why I almost always shoot in RAW. I also learned something concerning the use of a ring flash. Red Eye is still possible, especially when one of the subjects is not looking directly into the lens.

With one click on the WB card in LR3, I corrected the color issues, then synced the WB to all the other photos. So much easier and faster than having to fight the WB of every photo individually. This is one of the things I want to do more of when I shoot. Slow down, be deliberate, take the time to get it right when I shoot it. It's so much easier to get it right initially instead of laboring in front of the computer trying to save an image (for me, anyway).

A few exposure adjustments, cropping, and a tiny amount of retouching on each image & I was finished.

So, what did I take away from the shoot? I learned a few things about using my ring flash. The issues trying to auto focus when using it in the dark and how I'd correct it. I think I'd have been happier with a directional source of light (softbox or umbrella off to the side a little). I like shadows and the ring light removes them almost entirely. Finally, I'm so glad I used a WB card. If not I'm afraid every image would have been slightly different with regards to color.

Gear used in the shoot? Nikon D7000, 35mm 1.8, Nikon SB800, 2 pocket wizards, Orbis Ring Flash, Rosco 1/4 CTO gel.

Yesterday I was driving out to my parents' house and it had just began to rain. During the drive I saw no fewer than 3 cars stopped with the driver hanging from the window of each car, shooting pictures with little point & shoots in my general direction. I became fearful that my car was on fire or something. Then it hit me. Sunlight in front of me. Large storm clouds and rain behind me. I looked in the rearview mirror and saw a massive portion of a rainbow. It filled the majority of my side mirror. All day long I'd had my camera bag in the car with me. I had taken in out just before leaving. Stupid. So I shot a very poor pic with my iPhone. Lesson learned. It's very hard to shoot a photo without a camera (& a tripod)....

There is a store in our tiny town that sells over 100 varieties of Popcorn. It's the largest gourmet popcorn store in the world. I can't believe it does enough business to stay open here. Anyway, it's fabulous. This is one of my favorites, Loaded Baked Potato. Pizza is another good choice, so is chocolate peanut butter, or Oreo. I noticed today they now have M&M's flavor, & Kit Kat flavor, and, wait for it.......FRIED CHICKEN. Gotta try it next. The place is called Popcorn Haven. You can even order online.

Unfortunately I didn't get to eat any of the popcorn in this photo. I walked out of the room for a second and our Pug jumped onto the table and ate it all. Bad Dog!!!!!

Multi-processed RAW. Kim and I walked JJF late Monday afternoon. I didn't have a tripod with me so I just shot one image (instead of a bracketed set) and then attempted a non-software HDR type thing. Turned out ok.
